Weekend Edition: Curvy Closets Fashion Show

Happy Sunday all!

Last night I had the pleasure of attending my first Curvy Closets charity fashion show.  Curvy Closets is the creation of Dominique Revere-Lincoln (CEO of Empress Lingerie) and blogger/plus model Collen Stovall.  Their goal is to “bring the best of plus size fashion to Philadelphia…”  On top of being a great fashion show, the event also raises money for a charity of their choice.  This year over $2000 was raised for Hairless 4 Her Awareness, a non profit organization that is dedicated to promoting breast cancer awareness through community outreach.  It was great to be apart of an event that celebrates our curves and gives back to the community.

The show featured designers BellaNOR Boutique, Sean Anthony DesignsEmpress Lingerie, Kiyonna, KSY+ Elocin,  Ace Blakley  and the debut of September Plus Model Magazine cover girl &  Curvy Closets hostess Allison McGevna’s new line Twenty Four 20.  I gasped, ooohed and ahhhed and cheered the clothes coming down the runway.  The models were fierce and made me want to buy everything I saw! Here’s a look at  some of the amazing fashions from the night!

As an added bonus, I got to hang out with some of my favorite bloggers at the show. These ladies looked AMAZING and exuded so much positive energy!

If you’re wondering what I wore to the event well that’s a whole different story! I received a complimentary rental from Rent the Runway (they now offer plus sizes…woo hoo!) and when I went to put on the Carmen Marc Valvo dress I picked, it didn’t fit! YIKES! I totally went into panic mode and grabbed the first thing that I saw which was a dress that two years ago was baggy but now is TIGHT! Needless to say, I did not have a good fashion day! LOL

Despite my dress mishap, I had so much fun at the show. If you’re in the Philadelphia area next year, definitely check out Curvy Closets!

Have a wonderful day!

Fabulous Faux

Happy Hump Day all!

While scrolling through Pinterest last night, I came across GarnerStyle’s pin of this AMAZING Wilsons Leather faux leather jacket.  I instantly went “whoa!” and put it on my Must Have list for the Fall.  The jacket got me thinking about how far faux leather has come.  They’re no longer grainy and cheap looking jackets.  The jackets are now made with quality materials that mimic leather so much, you wont believe it’s faux.  The new faux leather jackets are better constructed to fit the plus body so you can move around without feeling stiff.  Better quality means a longer lasting jacket that can be worn year after year.    The faux leather jacket I bought from Kohl’s last year is still in great condition and has no signs of wear.

Adding a faux leather jacket to any outfit instantly adds edge and polish to any outfit. Try it with a  maxi dress or  jeans to update your look.  It’s one closet staple you’ll wont regret having!

Do you have a faux leather jacket? How do you wear it?

Have a great day!

Transitions Pt. 2: White Blazer

TGIF everybody!

Just because Summer is over,  it doesn’t mean you have to stop wearing your white blazer.  You wont be breaking any “fashion rules” because it’s no longer taboo to wear white after Labor Day.  A white blazer gives an outfit a crisp, polished look. If you feel a little uneasy about wearing a white blazer during the cooler months, start off slow and pair it with black.  You can’t go wrong with that timeless combo.  Once you feel more comfortable wearing white, experiment with other items in your wardrobe.

Will you wear white during the Fall/Winter?

Have a wonderful weekend!

5 Things I Love About Myself feat. Shondrika

Happy Hump Day all!

My friend Shondrika is a beautiful person inside and out.  So it was natural for me  to ask her to participate in my first “5 Things I Love About Myself” feature!

Here’s what she had to say!

1. My Smile
People say that a smile speaks louder than words and can heal a million souls. My smile just comes naturally. It’s the first thing others notice about me. I really love that I always have a smile that engages people and I believe it draws people to me. I believe that I’m speaking any healing through my smile

2.My energy
I truly live my life wanting to be there and help people.  I think that people see and feel your energy and what you bring to them. I truly believe that a person’s energy is what really speaks to their authentic self.  For me part of my energy is my sense of humor, my sense of care, my sense of empathy for other people. These are things that I absolutely believe in and are some of my favorite things about me

3. My “TNA”
While everyone is working really hard to lose the boobs and their derriere, I love mine. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m working towards getting it together. But if you don’t love yourself and your body parts no one else will so I embrace what you have. The key is to really love YOU! And I love ME, if I could add a selfie to this I would 😜.

4. My Family
Family is the foundation of yourself. My life, my story are all field with and grounded in the experiences that I have with my family and I love them. Family is blood and water,  there are people who I’ve been friends with for 15 years that I consider my family. So when I say family I’m talking about my mother, my sister, my brother, but I’m also talking about my best friend, my partner and people who are dear to me that I love. They are family to me.

5. The Piece of God That is in Me
Lastly I love that piece of God that is in me which is love. And not just love for myself but love for others, love for humanity in and for life. God is love, and love is within me.

IMG_6089Thank you Shondrika for sharing with us! I can personally attest to how wonderful she is!

If you ( yes you!) would like to be featured in “5 Things I Love I About Myself”, please submit your list and at least two photos of yourself to grownandcurvywoman1@gmail.com  I really hope you will participate!

Have a wonderful day!

Transitions Pt 1: The Sleeveless Dress

Happy Monday all!

Whenever I buy clothes I think primarily about sustainability.  If I can’t wear an item for at least two seasons, I’m probably not going to get it. Having an interchangeable wardrobe is essential because you’re getting more wear out of your clothes and it decreases the need to constantly replenish your closet.   Sleeveless dresses are definitely an item that you can get a lot of wear from. Plus  they  transition smoothly  from season to season.  The next time you want to wear a cardigan with  your sleevless dress, dont leave it open.  Button it up to create a crew neck sweater to wear over your dress.  Add a belt and ta da…its now a skirt!  This pretty much works on most sleeveless dresses so get creative, try it with your favorite printed or patterned sweater.

The easiest way to transition a sleeveless  dress is by adding a blazer. But instead of  reaching for a blazer, try a fitted leather jacket. It adds instant polish and  edge to your dress but Is still appropriate for work.
