Living And Learning

Happy Hump Day all!

Last weekend I headed up to NYC to attend Ashley Stewart’s Rock the Block event in Brooklyn.  As usual I used the event as an opportunity to hang with my boos Jami from Style Over Size, Darlene from Suits, Heels and Curves and Sandra from La Pecosa Preciosa.  I can’t stress enough how my friendship with them and my other girlfriends have taught me what it means to support other women. Unfortunately in our society, we are  taught to compete and view other women as potential threats.   Viewing women has competitors robs us of forming meaningful supportive relationships. For years I struggled with being a good friend to my girlfriends due to my struggles with insecurity and low self-esteem.  For years I was a shitty friend to my girlfriends who by the grace of God are still here to this day.  Through therapy and  A LOT of self reflection I was able to improve my self-esteem and self-worth. By decreasing my feelings of  inadequacy, I was able to stop being jealous of my friends and celebrate their successes.  Now don’t get me wrong, I am still a work in progress.  When I feel some of the old stuff trying to come up, I immediately check myself and get right. My friendships mean everything to me and I would never do anything to jeopardize them.

Have a wonderful day!

Casual Friday: Back On Track

TGIF all!

First I want to thank everyone for their kind words regarding my last post.  Your words helped me slowly come out of my funk. While I’m still hurt and angry about the situation in this country, I know I need to do my part in helping to affect change.  My anger and hurt has helped reinvigorate my commitment to be more active in my community.  I used to volunteer and be a Big Sister but I had allowed that to fade away. The events of the past two weeks have driven home the fact I cannot afford sit on sidelines anymore.  I can either choose sit and stew in my anger or I can use it as a personal call to arms.  I choose the later because seething in anger isn’t going to create change and progress.  Like the saying goes “don’t talk about…be about it”, I plan to do exactly just that.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Take Care

“Well, I’m tired and so weary

But I must go along”

Randy Travis

The events of this past week have left me feeling hopeless, helpless and depressed.  The murders of Phildanco Castile, Alva Braziel, Alton Sterling and Delrawn Small have me questioning not  “why can’t we all just get along?” but “why can’t we live?!” I refused to watch the brutal killings of Alton Sterling and Phildanco Castile.  My heart and soul could not take it.  I cried for their lives and the nameless other black men and women who are victims of police brutality.  I cried for my 31 year old nephew and 16 year old godson who have to live in a society that deems them so threatening that they need to be executed on site.  I cried for the five officers killed in Dallas during a peaceful protest…no one deserves to be gunned down…NO ONE!  I found myself sliding deeper into the abyss of despair and I knew had to take care of myself.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t mean you aren’t conscious or aware of the events going on around you. Practicing self care acknowledges that by taking a step back, you’re not allowing it to consume and overwhelm you. It’s okay to disconnect from social media and all the television coverage. It’s okay to do something that makes you feel good and smile.  It’s okay to laugh at a funny joke. It’s okay to be around loved ones and decompress.  Self care is not selfish…its self preservation.

I deeply hope one day the disease of racism will be eradicated so we can all live together as God intended.

Have a good Sunday.

Sunday Brunch With Gwynnie Bee

Happy Sunday all! Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday weekend so far!

Have you ladies ever heard of Gwynnie Bee? No? Well let me introduce them to you!

Gwynnie Bee is a subscription based clothing service that gives you the opportunity to have an unlimited closet.   They’ve curated clothing from retailers such as ASOS, Eloquii and City Chic  to meet your various lifestyle needs.  How does Gwynnie Bee work?  You browse and select clothing from their extensive clothing options. You then add your favorites to your virtual closet and they are sent to you.  It’s that simple. There’s no filling out a generic survey to have someone else one choose your clothing for you based on the results.  You have control over what you want to wear.     You also have the option to prioritize your closet to ensure you get the items that you want.  Depending on what plan you choose, you  can have anywhere from 3 to 7 items out at a time.  Once you get your items  wear and return them at your leisure( psst…shipping is free!) .  The thing I like about Gwynnie Bee is that it stops the whole buying and returning dilemma most of us face because our clothing is based online. With Gwynnie Bee there is no more rushing to return items within a certain period of time for a refund.  If you don’t like the item, return it and another item from your virtual closet replaces it.  Gwynnie Bee also gives you the freedom to try different brands and their clothing without hassle.  Take for example the this BB Dakota skirt I’m wearing in this post.  I’ve I’ve always hesitated buying their clothing because it’s a junior plus brand.  While browsing through Gwynnie Bee, I saw this skirt and wanted to try it so I added it to my closet.   When I got the skirt, the waist as tiny bit snug but not unwearable.   While the skirt was perfect for my casual Sunday brunch,  I knew I wasn’t going to wear it again so it’s going back  to Gwynnie Bee!

Gwynnie Bee is offering a free 30 day trial new subscribers to try the service out.  If you like it, keep it. If not, cancel before your 30 days is up!  Click here to sign up for your free trial today!

Have a wonderful weekend!

4th of July Cool

Happy Monday all!

I can’t believe the 4th of July weekend is right around the corner! It only seems like yesterday it was New Years Day and now half the year is done! Usually the holiday weekend is quiet for me because I stay away from overcrowded events.  This year I’ve been invited to a couple outings so I want to dress appropriately for the 4th of July weekend.   I’m not one for wearing flag t-shirts so I wanted to put something together that was cute and comfortable.  Neck scarves are hot right now so added  a red bandana  around my neck to my  gingham skirt and off the shoulder top combo.  I  liked the 50’s vintage flair the scarf added to my outfit so much I channeled my inner Rizzo from “Grease” and  busted out a quick hand jive (LOL)!

Have a wonderful day!

P.S. I took my braids out because I’m letting my hair breathe until I get it re-braided this weekend.  While I love my natural hair I miss the convenience of the braids.
