MLK Day/Colorful Shapes

Happy MLK Day all! I usually on this day reflect on what the great Dr. King did for the Civil Rights Movement. Although I didn’t grow up in the shadow of Jim Crow, I’ve definitely have reaped the benefits of the struggle. We must never forget our history. No matter how “equal” or “not racist” things seem, racism is still alive and very well. Fox News doesn’t even try to cover their racial biases. The sad thing about Fox is that they are the number one news channel on television. You can’t be number one if you don’t have people who subscribe to your ideology. It also doesn’t help with Republican Presidential nominee hopefuls like Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich making racially charged statements. It is now our responsibility to make Dr. King’s dream one day come true.

As I’ve stated before, I love color. Spring literally makes me happy because I can break out all my colorful clothes. Color blocking is the best thing that has EVER come along for a person like me. Wearing bright colors makes me happy and cheerful (well, not too cheerful while driving…gotta work on my road rage!). So to cheer me up on this freezing cold day, I decided to wear my new blouse from Old Navy. I love the diamond print of the blouse. It reminds me of an abstract painting. The fuchsia gives it enough punch of color to brighten any outfit. I can definitely see myself pairing this blouse w/a white or cobalt blue blazer.

I felt my Torrid Curvy skinny jeans (dark denim rinse) worked well with the blouse because it tapered my lower half giving a clean line. These are my FIRST pair of skinny jeans! I’ve tried on multiple pairs of skinny jeans & these by far had the best fit. The best thing about them is that they have a high waist, therefore NO CRACK showing when I sit down. It’s so relieving to know that your booty is totally covered when you sit down. No hiking up the jeans or covering your exposed crack with the back of your shirt. These jeans are the bomb!!!

I topped my look off with my purple suede flats that I’ve had for years from INC. See Virgie, you can color block without looking like a clown! LOL

What do you wear on a casual day?

One Week Old

Happy Friday!!! This week went by so fast! For me this week was really good. The icing on the cake was the compliment I received from the judge I work with. Now I know that doesn’t sound like much, but if you met him you would understand. Imagine the Grinch with glasses and a black robe on and you’ll get my drift! LOL

Today my blog turns a week old (YAY!!!). Writing here has given me so much confidence. I feel radiant when I walk. I’ve never felt that way before. I feel taller, braver and smarter. The positive feedback I’ve received has been amazing. My older sister Virgie sent me a text message that made me cry. She read my blog and said she was proud of me. My sister and I were not close growing up, but in recent years our relationship has blossomed. To hear this from her touched me deeply. I’m blessed to have family and friends who love and accept me for who I am. Please love yourselves. Dont waste time worrying about others opinions or thoughts. Care about yourself everyday. Embrace yourself, even the things you don’t like. Trust me, when you do you will feel like a million bucks!

My outfit today is real simple. Black and white. My blouse is from Old Navy. I like ruffles, so right away it appealed to me. Instead of wearing a blazer, I remembered I had a black vest from Torrid tucked away (next to the dress I wore in Wednesdays post! LOL) and decided to pair it with my blouse. I like the look. Casual and simple. I’m wearing my black straight leg trouser jeans from the Avenue. I’ve moved away from bootcut jeans. I conditioned myself to believe only bootcut jeans and pants look good on me. Puhleaze! I decided to try the straight legs and havent regretted it once.

I hope you enjoy my post. Please leave a comment. I love hearing from everyone!

Have a great weekend!

Use What You Got

Happy Hump Day!!! I hope the week so far is going well for all of you. My week so far has been really great. Here’s something funny I have to share. On Monday while walking down the hallway of my job (I work @ Family Court) this 15 year old boy waiting to see his probation officer was like “How you doin boo?” I was like “I’m old enough to be your grandmother!” Where we gonna go on our first date? McDonald’s? I had to chuckle.

I titled my post “use what you got” because I’m always saying I don’t have enough clothes. I have a short-term memory in regards to the contents of my wardrobe. Everyday I’m like “what am I gonna wear?!” Meanwhile my dresser drawers and closet are overflowing with clothes. I had to finally admit that I was a lazy dresser. It’s easy to say you don’t have enough and then go out buy more things. So enough lazy dressing! I fished through my clothes and found this dress that I wore one time!!! That’s ridiculous! I bought it last June from Forever 21+ for my trip to Las Vegas. I wore it once… in Vegas! After that I tucked it into my drawer, never to be seen again until now. I love the colors, pockets and draping of this dress. The draping compliments my shape wonderfully.

The sweater is from Macy’s INC line. I moved away from the traditional black cardigan sweater to this great scallop shaped one. The belt came with the dress and it ties the outfit together wonderfully. I fished through my accessories (which I desperately need to organize) and found this Target necklace. I like the metal that is wrapped around the beads. It gives the necklace a little edge.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!!!

Lady in Red

Good morning all! Hope you had a wonderful weekend. I spent the weekend with my nephew Frederick celebrating his 27th birthday. I had a wonderful time with him, Varaya, Stafford, Tynetta and Mike. My BFF Shoshanna joined in and provided the many LOLs.

Red is my absolute favorite color. I can’t get enough of it! I’ve been waiting patiently for a red skirt to come along & I finally found it. The pencil skirt is from Love.Ady and was on sale @ Bloomingdale’s for a mere $28 (marked down from $68!). Currently I’m in love with pencil skirts after years of telling myself I couldn’t possibly pull it off because of my hips. Hips be damn! I stopped thinking “no” and started thinking “hell yeah!” I’m not going to limit my fashion choices because of what someone may think. Now I have tweed, denim and leopard print (growl!) pencil skirts.

The blouse is from Ann Taylor Loft. I love the print and ruffles. I can dress it up or down. I knew when I bought this blouse, I would be wearing red with it. Or cobalt blue…hmmm…

I also wanted to give a HUGE shout out to my girl Thomasena (musicmoviesthoughs.wordpress.com) for helping me with getting my blog started. She was patient with me and provided the much-needed encouragement to actually see this through. Thank you gurl!

Also I want to thank Tamera for being my photographer. She is so sweet and helps with constructive criticism. Plus her little boy TJ is too CUTE!!!

Whew! Have a happy Monday!!! Four more days til Friday!!!

Here We Go…gulp!

I can’t tell you how nervous I am about this first post. I’ve always been the girl in the back never wanting to be noticed, afraid of her own voice. It’s taken me nearly 39 years to step into the front and say “Here I am!!!”

This blog is about me learning to love everything about myself from the small wrinkles in my eyes to the tips of my stubby toes. As my BFF says ” I’m in my bag” and hope you enjoy this journey with me.

On with the outfit! I love color and whenever I can put it into an outfit I do. Since its casual Friday I decided to wear a denim pencil skirt instead of jeans & one of my favorite cardigans. I’ve been trying to find a way to incorporate this yellow belt since I bought it several months ago. I think it works well with the blues and greys, giving the outfit a nice pop of color. Gotta have my trusty black tights because it was 32 degrees when I left for work!

Happy Friday!!! Have a great weekend!!!
