Casual Friday: The Plus Side of 40

TGIF all!

Yesterday,  Sandra of La Pecosa Preciosa and I were talking about being plus sized and in our forties.  We talked about how the stereotype that older plus size women have no style, wear moo moos and are uninterested in fashion continues to prevail.  I’ve seen the clothing options for the supposedly “mature” plus woman and it makes me cringe!   We like our younger plus size sisters, want access to quality, fashionable clothing too.   Our style doesn’t suddenly disappear once we hit a particular age.   If anything our style evolves because our views about how others see us changes. I can say without hesitation that I dress a thousand times better now at 42 than I ever did in my 20s & 30s.  I don’t subscribe to “dressing my age” philosophies and I’m open to trying new things.   Fifty percent of that is due to my self-confidence and the other is from the wisdom that comes with age.  I would like to see brands acknowledge this and reach out to us too.  Ask us what  our lifestyle needs are  so the clothing reflects that.   Don’t  just  assume its stretchy pants, shapeless dresses  and garish floral prints.  We want to look good as we  pursue our passions, help our children steer through adulthood, start or finish that degree or make a career change.   Wanting to look good doesn’t change no matter what age we are.   After all, style is FOREVER!

Here are a few plus 40+ size bloggers that smash all those stereotypes to pieces! If you know other 40+ plus size bloggers let me know in the comment section.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I am struggling with fashion in my 30’s. I sooooo need help. I can’t really look at an outfit someone has on and emulate it. I need to be taught. Where to learn! All of the outfits are gorgeous!!!

I too struggled with fashion in my 30s. Think about the clothing you naturally gravitate towards and start there. What colors do you like to wear or want to wear? What are your favorite items of clothing? Are you pant or skirt woman? The goal is not emulate others but develop your style. Developing your style takes time and it will change along the way. The goal is not to put pressure on yourself as you figure things out. Have fun with experimenting with your developing style and remember YOU make the clothes! I hope this was helpful!

I would never guess that any of these women are over 40. Either y’all look young or I look old at 30. I’m going with we all look fabulously youthful. Never let anyone tell you age matters. Wear what you want. When you want.

    • September 9, 2014 / 11:25 pm

Yes we all look fabulously youthful! 🙂

Ms. G! Yesyesyes! I so agree with everything you said! I”m WAY over 40 and I still want great fashionable options! People often say to me “you don’t dress or act 56” but I say “Yeah, I do! This is how the grown women I know look and dress!” Keep it going Ms. G, keep it going!

    • September 9, 2014 / 11:24 pm

Thank you so much! And you are so right…this is how grown women dress! 🙂

Just turned 55. Haven’t blogged in a while. Former plus size model ’80-’00 in Chicago. Style is innate. Fashion fades. Individuality is key. Invest in a wardrobe and not just trends. Your wardrobe is A reflection of your spirit. If you wear it …be it! Style, age and grace our keys to being a fashion legend! Keep on blogging loves. It inspires me!

    • September 9, 2014 / 11:23 pm

Exactly! I couldnt agree more! 🙂

I would say that we older gals have attitude and dress only for ourselves, but that’s not always true. I love to see you and all the others dress up and show off your kurves and I am here to try and copy it all. I will be looking at 63 this year and not stopping. You all are inspirational. Kudos!

Style transcends size. These outfits ROCK, period. I think some retailers are finally getting it. Lane Bryant’s new stuff is badass.
