Single Woman’s Guide to V Day

TGIF all!

If you let society tell it, Valentine’s Day is a curse to us single women. When I was in college my single friends and I would wear black to protest Valentine’s Day (yeah, we were cray cray).  For a long time, I  allowed the constant bombardment of Valentine’s Day movies and advertisements  make me feel like a loser because I wasn’t in a relationship.  It took me years to finally be at peace with Valentine’s Day.  Love is a wonderful thing and should be celebrated.  I know great people who are in loving, healthy relationships and I hope to be apart of such a union one day.  Until that happens, I can be happy and celebrate the love they have in their lives.   So if you find yourself bummed out on Valentine’s Day here are some tips:

  1. Acknowledge Valentine’s Day: I’m a hopeless romantic so I totally endorse watching your favorite sappy romantic movie on Valentine’s Day.  By doing this,  you are taking back some of power the holiday has over you.  I absolutely LOVE the 1996 BBC version of Pride & Prejudice and I will be watching it on Valentine’s Day.  To be honest I only watch it because I can’t resist seeing a young, hot Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy!
  2. Indulge A Little: Valentine’s Day is my excuse to indulge in a little chocolate deliciousness.  Don’t  settle for cheap chocolates from CVS! Head to Godiva and treat yo self!
  3. Spread Love: As we all know, love comes in various forms. So use the day to spread it! Tell those who mean the world to you how much you love them (you should be doing this anyway, but I digress!).  Bring your mom a heart shaped cupcake.  Reach out an elderly neighbor or relative and spend time with them.  Trust me, your presence will the best Valentine’s gift that you can give them.
  4. Let It Out: Go ahead and have a good ole ugly cry.  There’s nothing wrong with being disappointed about not having a Valentine.  The trick is not to internalize it and allow to define who you are.  Remember, Valentine’s Day is a manufactured holiday that primarily benefits Hallmark and FTD ! LOL

If you have any suggestions to add to the list please do!

Have a wonderful day!

Pantone Spring 2016 Blogger Collaboration: Buttercup Yellow

Happy Monday all!

Every year, Pantone anoints certain colors as the hues of the upcoming season.  To get ready for Spring, Jami from Style Over Size invited me to be apart of her Pantone Spring blogger collaboration.  I instantly chose Buttercup because I love wearing bold, bright colors. Although we’re in the middle of Winter, pairing these vibrant colors together made me feel like Spring is right around the corner!

Please check out the other bloggers in the collaboration in their Pantone Spring colors. Have a wonderful day!

Snow Daze

Happy Monday all!

For the first time in a while, the forecasters got it right!  Winter Storm Jonas has pretty much crippled the entire East Coast.  My family in NYC got nearly 30 inches of snow and here in Philadelphia  we got  22.5 inches.  Due to the city being completely incompetent about plowing  secondary streets, my neighborhood is still trapped under those 22 inches.  Without the plows, driving is nearly impossible.  Since I have to dig my car out, why not show off my glamorous outfit! LOL

Have a wonderful day!

Casual Friday: I Can

TGIF all!

The East Coast is bracing for a massive storm that is promising to deliver snow of biblical proportions (well at least according to the weather forcasters!).  Since Winter weather significantly reduces my ability to take pictures outside, I am forced indoors. Taking indoor pictures has always been my Achilles heel and my picture quality has suffered for it.   I seriously contemplated giving up on it but with some patience and help from the Google machine (heh heh), I’m beginning to get the hang of it.

Often we allow thoughts of “I can’t do this” get in the way ourselves.  None of us are immune from this. Conquering that “I can’t” voice can be difficult but not impossible. Practice tuning it out and little by little your “I can’t” will turn into ” I can”.

Have wonderful weekend!

Go Forth &Travel

Happy Monday all!

Travel is a goal that the majority of people list as a resolution for the new year.   But with all the responsibilities of life, it might seem to be an unattainable dream.  Well I’m here to tell you if you want to travel you can!  While I’m no travel expert, here are a few tips I use to travel on a budget.

If you have any travel tips, please feel free to share them!

Have a wonderful day!

  1. Make A List:  When I was 33  I made a list of 10 places I wanted to visit.  For the next 10 years I went about completing that list.   Making a list of the places you want to visit can help you keep focused on your goal. It also gives you a visual reminder of what you want to accomplish. travel, urban travel, black women who travel, USVI, st thomas, cancun, mexico, Caribbean, paris, Eiffel tower, beaches, caribbean beaches, grand cayman, rum point, budget travel, chitzen itza, travel tips, travel ideas, budget travel tips

2. Start Small:

When I started traveling I had a very limited budget.  While European destinations such as London were high on my list I had to wait until I could afford to go.   Although I had limited funds, I didn’t allow that to stop me from traveling.   Instead I focused on locations  on my list that fit my budget. By doing this I was able to visit Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and the US Virgin Islands until I could afford bigger trips.

3. Sign Up For Travel Alerts:

Signing up for travel alerts from sites such  Travelzoo, The Flight Deal, Cheap Caribbean and Airfare Watchdog can literally save you hundreds of dollars on vacations.  For my 2013 trip to Cancun, I used Cheap Caribbean to book our 4 star all inclusive resort for $700 for a 5 night stay for 2 people.  That came to $350 per person for the resort! Airfare Watchdog alerted me to a sale on flights to Cancun and we were able to get a non stop round trip flight for $330 per person.  Usually non stop flights between Philadelphia to Cancun can run anywhere from $500-$800, so our $330 fares were a steal!  In the end I only paid $680  for a 5 day vacation to Cancun. Now that’s a bargain!

4. Travel During Low Season:

Whenever I travel internationally I always go during the low season.  Why? Besides offering lower airfare and hotel prices,  you wont have to contend with large crowds around popular tourist sights.  For example, November to March  is considered low season for European travel.  When I went to Paris in March 2014, we didn’t have to wait in ridiculous lines at the Eiffel Tower or push past mobs of people to see the Mona Lisa.  We were able to enjoy all the attractions we wanted to see without a crush of people .  So research the low season for the destinations on your list and consider visiting then to avoid large crowds.

5. Take Your Time:

It took me nearly 10 years to complete my list of places I wanted to visit.  There is no need to rush through your list. There will times when you doubt your travel dreams…do not give into that doubt. Your dreams dont have time limits. If you keep focused and go at your own pace, you will achieve all your travel goals!
