Pinterest Fave: Ranti In Review

Happy Monday all!

Recently one of my lovely readers commented on my lack of “shopping my closet” posts.  The comment was a good wake up call because over the season, I’ve acquired new pieces that have allowed me to neglect existing items in my closet. I decided  use this opportunity to start a six week feature recreating  some of my favorite Pinterest pins with the clothes already in my closet.  During this  period I will TRY my BEST not to give into shopping urges.  It’s gonna be hard but  I know I can do it!

So to kick things off, I’m starting with the fabulous Ranti In Review! I’ve been a fan of her effortlessly chic style for awhile now so it was a no brainer to have her as my first Pinterest Fave!

Have a wonderful day!

Casual Friday: Lane Bryant Memories

TGIF all!

I know this Lane Bryant jumpsuit has already made the rounds but I couldn’t help posting it! When I was putting the jumpsuit on,  I begin to reminisce about my long term relationship with Lane Bryant. I began wearing Lane Bryant way back in the 10th grade,  My mother and older sisters were plus size too so I was exposed to Lane Bryant since I was a child. So when it was finally my turn to start wearing their clothes, it almost felt like a rite of passage into womanhood.  From that point on, Lane Bryant became a significant source of clothing throughout my life.  In college Lane Bryant’s heavy wool coats saved me brutal Binghamton winters, provided me with my first bra fitting and was where I got my first business suit for job interviews. I knew no matter the occasion, I could always depend on Lane Bryant to provide me with quality clothing. For these reasons and many more,  Lane Bryant will always occupy a special place in my heart.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Take Only What You Need!

Happy Monday all!

Over the weekend I had to the pleasure of attending BlogHer’s annual conference with my blogger babes in NYC. When I was packing for the conference I challenged myself to only bring enough clothes that could fit into a weekend duffel bag.  I decided to scale down after lugging a nearly 60lb suitcase Bermuda and not wearing half of what I brought. After that experience,  I vowed to stop over packing.  So here is what I took away from my scaled down packing experience:

1. Gotta Limit My Shoes: When I went on my cruise, I brought six pairs of shoes with me and only ended up wearing two pairs! Can you see what was wrong with this picture! LOL  When I was packing for BlogHer I knew I was going to be doing a lot of walking so there was no need for fancy shoes. So I limited myself to two pairs of flat sandals. I wore one pair traveling to NYC and packed the other pair. Yay me!!!

2. Learned To (FINALLY!!!) Pack Light: I would see article after article about packing light and would think “I can’t do that!”  Packing light became easy  once I stopped stressing myself out about “what am I going to wear!”  Instead I focused on bringing clothing that could be worn multiple ways without compromising style. I also challenged myself not to buy anything new for the conference and only shopped my closet for what I needed.  In the end I only  took two midi skirts, a dress and two shirts for my four day stay in NYC. No more 60lb bags for me!  Go me! Go me!

3. I’m A Proud Repeat Offender:  Basically the outfit I arrived in was the one I left in! This way no extra clothes were packed! YES!!!

I would love to get your packing tips or tricks that I can use.  I have another vacation coming up in the Fall, so I need all the help I can get!

Have a wonderful day!

P.S. I want to thank Sandra from La Pecosa Preciosa for taking my pics this weekend!

Perfectly Printed

Happy Monday all!

I never shy away from a great floral print so when I saw this gorgeous printed Eloquii dress I quickly snatched it up.   This is not your typical plus size floral print.  The print reminds me of an abstract watercolor painting not garish or harsh. The dress is very feminine and has a subtle sexiness to it. Unfortunately (as with all nice PS clothes!) the dress is sold out but I say sign up for the wait list, it is definitely worth it!

Have a wonderful day!

Casual Friday: Plus Friendly

TGIF all!

Sorry I’ve been out of the blogging loop lately. A week ago I had to make the heart wrenching decision to have my beloved cat Picachu euthanized. So needless to say I wasn’t in the mood to blog about anything.  I miss my baby but  I know she is in a better place and is no longer suffering.

Today I’m sharing  my tips on how to buy from my favorite “plus friendly” retailers.  My favorite big girl friendly stores are the Gap, H&M, Old Navy and  Loft. Why? Because I try not allow my size to limit my fashion choices.  As plus size women we have to get creative with our wardrobes so branching out to non plus size retailers was inevitable. Once you know how to look for plus friendly clothes, you’ll waltz into your local stores without any hesitation (P.S.   J Crew, Boden USA and Ann Taylor also carry sizes 18-20 online).

Here are some of my tips:

1. Elastane : stretch in clothing is key so look for items that have more than 2% elastane in them. The higher percentage of elastane in a garment, the more stretch it will have.

2. Elastic waists: I know elastic waists are frowned down upon but they comfortably adjust to your waist. In the pic below  I’m wearing an XL elastic waist skirt from Loft which fits my size 20 waist just fine. Also Old Navy XXL elastic waist skirts can easily accommodate waists that are above a size 20.

CC12

3. Dolman sleeves: Dolman sleeves are defined as a full sleeve that is wide in the armhole and narrow at the wrist.  This cut is very forgiving for big arms .  Many dolman sleeved tops are made with stretchy materials so you’re not constricted.

4. A Line Skirts: An A line skirt can be your best friend.  When I shop “straight” stores pencil skirts don’t fit of because my juicy hips BUT an A line skirt does because it skims (not hugs)  your hips.

5. Read The  Reviews: I always read the reviews when I shop online.  The reviews give me insight on how others are experiencing the garment. Reviews that talk about an item being roomy or “size down, it’s big”, I zone in it and order the largest size because 9 times out of 10, the garment fits.

6. Try It On: What do you have to lose? The only thing that can happen is that it doesn’t fit! Over the July 4th weekend I went into H&M and tried on this size 14 palm print shirt (in the pic below) and guess what…it fit perfectly!

What are some of your favorite “plus friendly” stores and tips for shopping non plus size retailers?
