Today is my 41st birthday and I’m feeling fine! I’m extremely grateful to see another year of life. This year I plan to visit Paris, continue a healthy lifestyle and apply for a doctorate in social work (finally!). So far my forties are becoming the best years of my adult life!
Here’s a pic of what I wore to dinner with my friend Andrea. It was a casual dinner but I didn’t feel like wearing jeans today so I opted for my black & white striped pencil skirt and red peplum top.
You know when you have an idea for an outfit but when you put it on its nothing like you imagined? That is how I feel about my outfit today. I thought I would create a striped suit with my Old Navy pencil skirt and Nordstrom Rack blazer. In my mind it thought it would look stylish but after I put it on, I didn’t feel so stylish. Since I always wait to the last minute to get dressed in the morning, I had no choice but to wear it to work. While I don’t hate the outfit, I think I should have worn something different with the skirt. The beauty of fashion is that you can take risks and try new things. Through trial and error you learn what does and doesn’t work for you. I will definitely wear these separates again, just not together!
How do you handle a fashion disappointment?
I’m off to Vegas tomorrow morning so I will be back next Wednesday with pics of my mini vacation!
I’m filled with pride today that President Obama was sworn in for a second term (yay!) and remembering the courage of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. The gains of the Civil Rights Movement allowed me to obtain a higher education, become a professional and enjoy the same rights as other Americans. I can now say in my lifetime Ive witnessed my country elect a biracial man for president twice. I am profoundly grateful for Dr. King and all those who sacrificed so much for my generation and generations to come.
Now there is no way I could write this and not mention my style hero Michelle Obama. She wore a magnificent fit and flare blue (checkered I believe) coat accentuated by a wonderful statement belt from J Crew. And her bangs?! Gorgeous! Under that fab coat Michelle rocked a simple blue and white striped dress which made me clap with glee. Why so happy you ask? Stripes happen to be my latest print obsession. So when I saw the FLOTUS wear it I had to share some wonderful striped pieces to add to your wardrobe!
Yesterday was my blog’s first anniversary! YAY!!!!
This time last year I nervously clicked the “publish” button and viola! Grown and Curvy Woman was born. This little blog has made a BIG impact on my life. Blogging has really opened and expanded my world in such a positive way. It has taught me to be more creative, self-confident and less shy. I’m now more willing to step outside my comfort zone and try new things. My blog has also given me a source of pride that I haven’t felt in years.
There are two people I need to thank because without them I wouldn’t be here. Thank you Thomasena for introducing me to WordPress and encouraging me to start my blog. There are not enough ways to say thank you to Tamera (aka Le Mer) for her unwavering support. When I asked Tamera a year ago if she would take my blog pictures (with my iPhone no less! LOL) she didn’t hesitate to say yes. To this day, Tamera still takes my blog photos.
And to my awesome readers,THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for your support. Your wonderful comments and emails mean so much and have inspired me to keep blogging. Again, THANK YOU!!!!
Now that the holidays are over, I’m faced with the dilemma of what to do with my sequin clothes. I don’t want to pack my sparkly stuff away just yet so I decided to incorporate them into my everyday wardrobe. I picked the pencil skirt because it was the easiest to wear. To get past the sequins, I treated it like a regular black skirt. I wore my denim shirt and v-neck sweater to make the skirt more casual (you know I had to have a pop of color!). I kept my accessories simple with a chain link necklace and sliver studs in my ears. I completed my look by wearing opaque tights and pointy toe flats. Overall I think I did a pretty good job on my first try. I’m sure there are some things that I could have done differently but in all I’ll give myself a B+ for this assignment!
