We Gon’ Be Alright

TGIF all!

I’d be lying if I said the incoming administration doesn’t scare the heck out of me.  I’m worried about the policies and laws that will impact communities of color, Muslims, women and LGBTQ rights under his presidency. While I have my fears, I won’t allow it to immobilize me. I am encouraged by the growing number people  of all races, sexual preferences and religions who have begun to come together to fight against racism, police brutality,  voter suppression, Islamophobia, homophobia and misogyny.  I’ve made a promise to myself not to stand by and watch injustice transpire.  I will stand up for my fellow Americans any way I can.  I believe this country will move forward and one day fulfill it’s creed that every man (and woman) is created equally.

While I am beyond sad to see President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama go, I feel so blessed to have witnessed his historic presidency.  I wish  my mother had been alive to see our county’s first African American president.  My mother was born in the South and was apart of the Great Migration to the North to escape Jim Crow’s soul crushing oppression.  For her to have seen Obama become president would’ve been validation that the struggle was worth the terrible price that was paid by so many who fought (and continue to fight) for our freedom.   I’m certain my mother would have burst with pride back in 2008 casting her vote for Obama.

So while I have my fears, I know no matter what we gon’ be alright.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Getting Through The Post Holiday Slump

Happy Monday all!

Are you like me and find yourself feeling “blah” now that the holidays are over?   During the holidays there is so much excitement and energy but once it’s over, its back to business as usual.  I know it can be a little  hard to move past the holidays so here are few tips to get through the post holiday slump.

  1. Get Outside: Even though it’s cold, still get outside the house.  Staying indoors is one way to keep yourself in mired in a slump.  Make a brunch date with your girlfriends.  Go to a matinee.  Volunteer your services to a local charity.  So get out of bed, throw on some clothes and get out there!
  2. Treat Your Self: You know I am a huge advocate for treating one self.  Schedule a full body massage.   Buy that new shade of lipstick that pops against your skin (I bought this Lancome lipstick for NYE and it looks FABULOUS on me!).  Treat yourself to that restaurant that has been on your “to do” list since the Summer. Now that the holidays are over you can put yourself first!
  3. Reduce Negativity In Your Life:  When you find yourself in a slump, it’s real easy to dwell on negativity.  Reducing the negative vibes in our lives can help you successfully get through a slump.  Sometimes that means limiting contact with that family member  or friend that complains about everything.  That also means curtailing  those negative comments we make about ourselves.  If there is negativity in your life, reduce it so you can move forward.

If you have any tips about getting through the post holiday slump please feel to share!

Fall Staycation: Denim Crush

Happy Hump Day all!

On the last day of my weekend staycation , Jami and I headed into the Fairmount section of Philadelphia for brunch and to visit the Philadelphia Art Museum.  On the weekend you can usually  find me in jeans and sneakers but for my staycation I wanted to elevate my weekend uniform. To achieve this I decided to wear a denim on denim outfit.   I wore a cute denim shirt with a pair of wide leg jeans, this Eloquii coat to ward off the late Fall chill (you can also find some really good Fall/Winter coats at Simply Be ) and my blue velvet booties (you can’t really see them but they are AWESOME!).   Denim on denim will always be a classic because it’s a cool, casual look that looks good on everyone regardless of size.

Jami and had such a good time exploring Philadelphia during my staycation. I’m planning on doing another one next Spring when Philly really comes alive.  If you haven’t done a staycation  yet I totally recommend you do so!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everybody!
