Happy Monday all!
Around the country we pay respect to the men and women who lost their lives serving in our armed forces during Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day weekend is also looked upon as the unofficial start of Summer. Alongside services honoring our fallen, there are a plethora of events, festivals and activities aimed at keeping you busy over the long weekend. Luckily, most of these events are free or require a nominal fee so you wont go broke! Below are twelve examples of free and affordable Memorial Day weekend activities across the country.
Please feel free to add any Memorial Day weekend activities you know of!
Have a wonderful day!
Atlanta: If you love jazz, Atlanta Jazz Festival is an amazing way to spend the holiday weekend!
Boston: For my museum buffs, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts offers free admission all day on Memorial Day.
Charlotte: The Mint Hill Madness festival has carnival games, food and something for every member of the family!
Chicago: Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival offers music, food and fun for the whole family!
Dallas: Love classical music? Dallas Symphony Orchestra is having a free concert & firework display on Memorial Day at Flag Pole Hill.
Houston: Looking to dance off all that barbecue you ate? Head over to“Dancin In The Street…Motown Revue & More” to boogie down as they tribute musical legend Stevie Wonder.
Los Angeles: If arts & crafts is your thing, Fiesta Hermosa is right up your alley! According to their website, the festival is Southern California’s largest arts & crafts festival with 300 artists!
New York City: Every year my hometown hosts Fleet Week celebrating the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. During Fleet Week, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum offers an array of activities for the whole family!
Orlando: On Sunday, head over to Lake Eola Park and take a stroll around the Orlando Farmers Market. The pet friendly market also hosts a beer & wine garden…OH YEAH!
Philadelphia: Memorial Day weekend is the start of the Blue Cross River Rink Summerfest season. During the Winter, the River Rink hosts ice skating but in the Summer it is transformed into Philly’s only outdoor rollerskating rink! New to the Summerfest this year is a nine hole mini golf course and a delicious Chickie’s & Pete’s Waterfront Crab Shack! (I’m dragging my goddaughter here on Saturday!)
San Francisco: Want to do something different this Memorial Day weekend? How about taking a walking tour?! A walking tour is a great way to learn more about your city and it’s history. San Francisco City Guides offers free historical walking tours of the city. Their walking tours are lead by highly knowledgeable volunteers who love San Francisco!
Washington DC: This weekend if you’re in or visiting the our nation’s capital, why not take a free tour of the Smithsonian Gardens? The gardens (which are located in or around several Smithsonian museums) are an oasis in the middle of all the hustle and bustle.
