Spring Trends Part II: Florals

This week we are taking on the floral trend which  in my opinion will always be around.  I’m kind of a newbie when it comes to wearing florals because for so many years I hated it.  Growing up all saw offered to plus size  women were ugly, garish  floral print  clothes .  I was completely turned off by florals until I came upon this awesome  Simply Be maxi dress (worn as a skirt for my post today!) a year ago .  This dress has single-handedly changed my perception of floral print forever.  I learned that I could wear a beautiful vibrant print  without feeling  like a huge flower.

Busy Bee

Happy Monday all!

Usually my weekends are slow but this past weekend I was quite the busy bee!

On Friday Shonna (my BFF) asked me to judge a talent show for her students and I accepted.  There’s nothing like being around a bunch of 18-20 year olds to remind you how old and out of step you are! I couldn’t understand half the songs the DJ was playing and the dancing….WOOOOO! Lets just say it gives the term “bump and grind” a whole new meaning! LOL

On Saturday evening, Shonna and I decided to get gussied up and head downtown for dinner.  We went to foodie favorite  Oyster House and proceeded to happily stuff our faces with wonderful seafood.  The lobster bisque I had was the best I’ve tasted in a long time.  Shonna is a  seafood aficionado  so when she gave it a big thumbs up I knew I did a good job picking the restaurant.

One of my new year resolutions was to get out more and meet new people.  So I signed up for Mahogany Philly on Meetup and went to my first event at the National Constitution Center on Sunday.  The National Constitution Center is a fairly new museum that is dedicated to the history of the US and the Constitution.  Im huge museum nerd and I like to take my time wandering the exhibits so I knew I had to be comfortable.  I kept things colorful and  wore my favorite straight leg jeans, colorful striped tee and a neon cardigan.  I had a great time with the ladies of Mahogany Philly.  I’m looking forward to attending more of their events and meeting  more people!

Happy Hump Day all!

Over the weekend I headed to Las Vegas with my buddy Tamera and her grandmother for a mini vacay. This was Tamera’s first time in Vegas and she had a blast! I played blackjack for the first time, won some money, ate great food and hung out all night (trust me I’m feeling it today! LOL). While this was my fourth time in Vegas its always a new experience with different people. Tamera and her grandmother (Granny as we call her) were the best travel companions anyone could ask for!

Casual Friday/No Fuss

TGIF or thank God its BLACK FRIDAY! Tee hee!

Just wanted to post a quick picture of what I wore on Thanksgiving day.  Thanksgiving dinner at my  sister’s house is  very laid back/come as you are, so I decided to  ditch the outfit I had planned and kept things simple.

As for Black Friday shopping, yes I was out there with the throngs of New Yorkers in the wee hours of the morning.  I hit up Old Navy, H&M, Macys and JCPenney.   I came away with a few items that will be featured on the blog in a couple of weeks.  The thing I’m most proud of is that I stuck to my budget and made no expensive impulse purchases.  Yay me!

Happy Hump Day all! Hope everyone is getting ready for Thanksgiving tomorrow!  I’m headed to NYC  later today to spend the holiday with my family.   We always have a great time together so I’m really  looking forward to hanging out with them.

Today I’m featuring one of my favorite bloggers  Alissa from Stylish Curves.  I discovered Stylish Curves browsing through the internet while  out on FMLA last year.  Alissa’s blog opened up a world of plus size retailers  that I didn’t even know existed.  I instantly became a fan of her “Style Journey” posts featuring her in  fabulous clothes.  Prior to discovering her blog, I didn’t think plus size women could dress fashionably.  Alissa totally crushed that belief and Ive been a loyal follower since.

Alissa  is also a staunch advocate for plus size women within the fashion industry.  Recently she was on Good Morning America discussing  how plus sized women are perceived and overlooked in fashion. Alissa wasn’t afraid to speak her mind and voiced many sentiments we  feel about the industry. Her presence on GMA was important because it contradicts many stereotypes that continue to exist.  Alissa was beautiful,  poised and confident, something many people don’t see plus size women as.  This is why she  is my style inspiration!

Casual Friday/Rainbow Bright

TGIF everyone!

This morning  I woke up to a cloudy, dreary day.  To add further insult to injury, the weather reports are predicting that  Hurricane Sandy will make landfall early next week! UGH!  A cranky  Georgette is not a good Georgette (LOL!)  so wearing this vibrant outfit  was just what I needed to lift my spirits.  As you probably have noticed, I love color.  There is something about putting on a brilliant hue that  instantly makes me feel better. Instead of having a scowl on my face this morning, I was smiling.  Sure I got a few  ”what the hell is she wearing “  kind of stares on the train platform  but I didn’t care.  All I know is that I felt good and in the end that’s all that matters!

You Aint Nothin But A Hounddog

Happy Hump Day all!

Confession time, I didn’t know there was anything such as dogstooth.  I’m assuming its the  half-brother/sister of houndstooth being that the latter gets all the attention. Either way, when I saw this dogstooth pencil skirt on Simply Be’s website with 50% off, I had to make it mine.  Pairing the skirt with red seemed like a natural choice although  I could see myself wearing a cobalt blue with it in the future.   I wanted to add some  ”edge” up my look so I wore my faux leather jacket from Kohls to “toughen” it up  (Me tough?! Ha! I still sleep with a night light! ). If the jacket looks familiar to you, I wore the green one here.  Lets just say, I’m slightly enamored with the jacket  :)

I want to thank all of  you for your wonderful and encouraging  comments on my previous post “Change is Gonna Come”.  This might sound a little corny, but I feel closer to you ladies after reading your responses.  Again thank you for being the BEST readers in the world!!!

An Oldie but a Goodie!

When I bought this Simply Be trench coat back in the Summer, I couldn’t wait to wear it.   The faux leather on the sleeves instantly  updates the classic trench giving it some edge.  Its  a great way to  incorporate the current leather trend  and still be appropriate to wear to work.   The coat is true to size  and  isn’t snug or tight.   There is enough room  to wear layers or a chunky sweater underneath.  I was looking  to update my trench coat  this season and this fit the bill perfectly!
